Suzuki outboard year decoder

Suzuki prints the model year right on the ID plate as a two-character suffix: K7 is 2007, L3 is 2013, M2 is 2022. Enter your model code below — or memorize the pattern in one read, because it's the simplest year system in the outboard world.

The year-code system

Since 2001, the letter gives the decade and the digit gives the year within it — K for the 2000s, L for the 2010s, M for the 2020s. Before that, single letters covered the late 90s:

Suzuki outboard model-year codes
CodeModel year
V / W / X / Y1997 / 1998 / 1999 / 2000
K1 – K92001 – 2009
L0 – L92010 – 2019
M0 – M92020 – 2029

Reading the full model designation

Take DF140TLK7: DF is the four-stroke family, 140 the horsepower, T power trim and tilt, L a 20-inch shaft, and K7 the year — 2007. Older two-strokes read the same way behind a DT prefix. The ID plate sits on the transom clamp bracket, with the serial number below the model code.

When there's no suffix

Engines before 1997, and some export models, skip the year code. There the serial number is your key: a Suzuki Marine dealer's serial table converts it to the exact model year. Worth doing on any used purchase anyway — it also confirms the plate matches the powerhead.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the serial number on a Suzuki outboard?

On the ID plate on the transom clamp bracket. It carries the model designation (e.g. DF140TL K7) and the serial number. Some models repeat the serial on a sticker under the cowling.

What does K7 mean on a Suzuki outboard?

It's the model-year code: K codes cover 2001–2009 (K1 = 2001 … K9 = 2009), L codes cover 2010–2019 (L0 = 2010 … L9 = 2019), and M codes run from 2020 (M0). So K7 is a 2007 model.

What does DF stand for on Suzuki outboards?

DF marks Suzuki's four-stroke line (the number after it is horsepower — DF140 is a 140 HP four-stroke). The older two-stroke line was DT. Letters after the horsepower cover shaft length and controls, and the year code comes last.

My Suzuki has no year suffix — how do I find the year?

Pre-1997 models (and some markets) don't carry the suffix. Give the full serial number from the ID plate to a Suzuki Marine dealer — their serial tables resolve the exact model year.

The hull has a story too.
